Taking place in a vision of the DC Universe where Superman completely breaks bad after the Joker tricks him into murdering Lois Lane and destroying Metropolis, the fighting game series and comics were unafraid to feature some high profile deaths of many fan-favorite characters, often dispatched with brutal efficiency. One particularly tragic loss was the death of Nightwing but, fortunately for Dick Grayson, he still had a large superhero role to play from beyond the grave.
When the superhero schism first occurred, between Superman's increasingly more brutal and burgeoning totalitarian regime and Batman 's moves to lead a resistance to oppose him, Dick and current Robin Damian Wayne found themselves on opposite sides of the divide. Dick sided with his lifelong mentor and surrogate father figure while Damian was at odds with his father, in favor of continuing Superman's new direction of executing supervillains and criminals that he deemed irredeemable while crushing anyone that attempted to stop him.
This disagreement resulted in Nightwing accidentally being killed by Robin when Damian hit Dick in the head with one of his escrima sticks, with the staggered Dick falling to the ground and breaking his neck on a set of rocks inconveniently located at his feet in Injustice: Gods Among Us 6, by Tom Taylor, Mike S. Miller, Jheremy Raapack and David Yardin. This infuriates Damian and he hurls his baton at Dick. However, this time Grayson is occupied by the fight and is struck in the head by the weapon.
In one of the most shocking deaths of the series, Dick goes down, fatally breaking his neck on a rock. In a series chock-full of death and destruction, this is arguably the stupidest death. There is no dignity in Nightwing's death, as opposed to most of the others that occur in Injustice. He doesn't die standing up to Superman or fighting for something he believes in. He dies somewhere between the whim of an angry brat and a freak accident -- and many fans of the series feel that he deserved more.
As such, Dick went into orphanage, and he was soon adopted by Bruce Wayne. Later revealing to him his secret identity, Dick followed in he footsteps of Batman by becoming his sidekick, Robin. Years later, Robin would become his own person, founding the Teen Titans and changing into Nightwing, after a Kryptonian legend. This would open up the doors to other people becoming Robin , as well as being the new definitive identity for Dick.
He is dazed by Bane and nearly hit by Luthor's barrage of missiles, only for Raven to save him at the last moment. He trades a few quips with Cyborg before contacting Batman and requesting backup. Batman insists on making sure the Joker is still locked up despite Nightwing's assurance he is.
Nightwing continues to battle Bane , but is subdued just as Batman finally arrives, defeating Bane and Luthor. In the aftermath of the battle, Nightwing handcuffs Catwoman and knocks Luthor out after he begins to rant about his plans for destroying and rebuilding Metropolis via The Joker , also quipping that Luthor's "done.
The Alternate Dimension's version of Dick is long dead by the start of the game's story, with Damian Wayne having taken his place as Nightwing. The answer you're looking for is that NRS just wanted dick grayson in the game and put him in the recap part of the story as an excuse to make him playable. Same reason joker's in I2. He's not vital to the story at all. He's not in I2 because he's dead and not relevant to the game's story. He's still around, though. As the new Deadman.
