He also tells him how Vishnu severed Rahu's head and about the Samudra manthan. Jalandhar resented the Samudra manthan. He believed that the Devtas had treacherously taken his father, Varuna's treasures. He sent one of his messengers, Ghasmar, to Indra to ask him to return his father's treasures.
However Indra refused to do so. A fierce battle took place between the Devtas and Asuras. Devtas severly defeated. Demoralized, the Devtas requested Vishnu for his aid. Vishnu agreed but promised Lakshmi that he would not kill Jalandhar since he was born out of the ocean and Lakshmi considered him as her brother.
A fierce battle was fought between Jalandhar during which Lord Vishnu overpowered Jalandhar and was about to behead Jalandhar with his divine sword, Nandak when Lakshmi intervened and prohibited Lord Vishnu from killing him. Vishnu was impressed by Jalandhar's valiance in battle and told him about Lakshmi's relationship with him. Vishnu then asked him to demand any boon he desired.
Jalandhar asked Vishnu to make Ksheera Sagara his home. Vishnu agreed and Jalandhar started living there along with Lakshmi. Very soon, Jalandhar became the emperor of the three worlds heaven, earth and hell. The Devtas were unhappy about their defeat. They did not wish to be ruled by Jalandhar despite the fact that he was the son of Shiv. The sage Narad upon consulting with the Devtas went to see Jalandhar. On being asked the purpose of his visit by Jalandhar he described the beauty of Kailash where Shiv lived and that he wondered whether any other place matched its beauty.
The doorman closed his eyes and Indra saw as the doorman curbed his anger with great difficulty. Indra saw something fly out of the doorman — something fierce, red and burning. Once the thing emerged from the doorman, Lord Shiva appeared before Indra in his normal form. You had made me very angry. I was actually tempted to open my third eye and burn you to ashes. I could not just hold any grudge against you. Because I was not willing to use it against you.
My anger was dragged away from me. It is now inside the ocean. Lord Indra once again asked Lord Shiva for forgiveness and went back to his palace a wiser man. However that was just the beginning of the problems of Indra. Lord Shiva being a very powerful person, his anger was very potent, when all his anger was deposited in the ocean waves, the anger immediately transformed into a young baby!
The baby wailed and wailed. Lord Brahma the God of creations, heard the cries of the baby and came there. He picked up the baby in his arms. The baby he found was extraordinarily heavy. As Lord Brahma picked up the baby, he felt the tiny hands of the baby pluck at his beard. The force with which the baby tugged at his beard was great, that Lord Brahma nearly cried out! For this I name you Jalandhara [One who brings water]. As Jalandhara grew up, he became more and more proud of his strength.
He realized that he could defeat anyone with his strength. The Gods hoped that Jalandhara would join them and they could make use of his strength. However Jalandhara had other ideas. He wanted to become the leader of the Asuras.
When he came of a marriageable age, Jalandhara went to a very powerful asura by name Kalanemi. Kalanemi had a beautiful daughter by name Vrinda. Vrinda was extremely intelligent and she was a very great devotee of Lord Vishnu. So Vrinda and Jalandhara were married a few days later. Because of her devotion to Lord Vishnu, Vrinda had enormous amount of yogic powers. Vrinda loved her husband with all her heart and because of her, Jalandhara became powerful and invincible.
Shukracharya, the Guru of the Asuras, realized how powerful Jalandhara had become after his marriage to Vrinda. He decided to crown Jalandhara, the king of the Asuras. The Asuras also willingly followed the powerful Jalandhara.
He got blessed as one of the greatest teachers of this world. Vrinda was organizing a prayer of her adorable God, Narayana, to provide ultimate protection to her husband. Jalandhar loved and respected his wife. Although he hated deities, but for the happiness and wish of his wife, he was ready to become part of her prayer. Narayana knew that if prayer got completed successfully, it will become impossible to defeat Jalandhar and that would lead to the destruction of this world.
With heavy heart, Narayana decided to break the faithfulness of Vrinda for the welfare of the whole world. He went in disguise of Jalandhar and became part of the prayer of Vrinda. This way her faithfulness broke and Jalandhar lost all the protection. Why Narayana broke the faithfulness of Tulsi and became Shaligram stone? When Vrinda knew about this, she got into deep sorrow and cursed Narayana that one day somebody will also cheat with his wife and she will also have to bear the embarrassment of unfaithfulness.
Narayana apologized and accepted the curse. Vrinda was heart broken because her adorable God cheated with her. Sometimes Narayana takes wrong path to fight unrighteousness. He is the moderator of this world and to protect it from evils, He could take any road. Narayana was embarrassed over his deeds and over the death of Vrinda. So He went into deep Yoga Nidra. He woke up again when Narad evocated him during the Dhumavati Avatar of Parvati and universe was on the verge of holocaust.
After looking at the dead body of Vrinda, Jalandhar went into deep sorrow. His mother, wife and guru all left him. The pain and revenge made him the arch enemies of Trinity Gods.
He took pledge that either the anger fire Jalandhar himself or the revenge fire will end in the war. He attacked Mahadev. Kartikeya, Ganesha, Nandi and deities fought with him and got defeated. Then Shukracharya instructed Jalandhar to submerge the Drongiri mountain into sea because that is where Brihaspati got all the medicinal herbs for bringing back the dead to life.
Then Brihaspati could not help the Gods and they were defeated. Jalandhar had captured the Heavens. The Gods after being defeated approached Lord Vishnu for help to which he agreed. But Goddess Lakshmi was not happy as she considered Jalandhar as her brother for being originated from Sea and requested Vishnu not to kill him. Vishnu agreed to fight Jalandhar but assured that he will not be killed. Jalandhar requested Vishnu to make Ksheera Sagar which is the sea of milk as his home along with his sister Goddess Lakshmi.
Vishnu agreed to this and thereafter lived in the sea of milk along with Lakshmi. The deities met Narada and sought his help. He went to meet Jalandhar and provoked him to have Parvati as his consort. Shiva got furious and was about to destroy Rahu but Rahu begged for pardon and was left. Rahu then went to Jalandhar and narrated the story. Jalandhar attacked Shiva with his army and a fierce battle was fought.
When Jalandhar was not able to gain upper hand , he created an illusion and many apsaras started dancing. The army of Shiva got enchanted with this and their mind got deviated. During this period, Jalandhar tried to disguise himself as Lord Shiva and went to Parvati, but she recognised him. Later when she came to know the truth, she cursed Vishnu and jumped into fire. Meanwhile, Shiva and his army got over the illusion and defeated Jalandhar.
Jalandhar merged with Lord Shiva.
