Where is watership down based




















The animated version of Watership Down holds a particular place in the cultural psyche of an entire generation.

Everyone remembers the hopelessly sentimental Art Garfunkel theme song. Many will never forget the trauma of witnessing big-eyed bunny rabbits being mercilessly and bloodily slain.

They also address the multiple theories about the true message of Watership Down. They recall being six and eight in the mids and on a long car journey to the theatre from London to Stratford-upon-Avon. The animation, featuring the voices of John Hurt and Richard Briers, was scarringly graphic. The fact that the animated tale is what it says on the tin may irritate critics but it's a line that Adams has been peddling for a few years. A story, a jolly good story I must admit, but it remains a story.

Its power and strength come from being a story told in the car. It's hard to ignore that there are echoes of military life in the story. Aside from the dictatorship that appears towards the end of Watership Down , a Guardian critic believes the book was inspired by Adams' war experiences in the Middle East.

After all, the language that the rabbits speak, Lapine, does appear to have references to Arabic speech. The BBC adaptation, which will air in two parts, stars a stellar cast.

In an interview with the Mirror , Arterton described the remake as a " harrowing wake-up call to get us to look at what we are doing to our environment and society.

It's an epic beautiful story but it's filled with tragedy as well. In the book, Watership Down is the safe haven that Hazel, Fiver and the other rabbits try to reach when their home at Sandleford is threatened by humans.

Adams didn't just invent these names, as every location in the book was based on an actual place. Watership Down is in Hampshire, on the southern edge of the North Wessex Downs, and is a lovely backdrop for a walk. View from Watership Down. It's a gentle climb along good quality paths.
