Who is theon greyjoy in game of thrones

That changed in season 2 when Theon became much more pivotal. In this episode, Theon is sent home to the Iron Islands by Robb to recruit his father to his campaign. Theon thinks he is returning home as a hero but is met with disdain and hostility. It also establishes that Theon is surprisingly not the worst member of his family. Theon's arc in the second season is all about him wanting to prove himself to the family that seems to hate him, and he does so by betraying the family who accepted him.

Taking a group of soldiers, Theon attacks the unprotected Winterfell and holds Bran Stark as his hostage. The episode is a great showcase of Theon's misguided and pathetic attempts to be respected.

His tough-guy act is easy to see through and the messy beheading of Rodrik Cassel made it clear that this downfall would not be pretty. The relationship between Theon and Yara was always a very complicated one in the show. Starting with their very awkward reunion on the Iron Islands, Yara continued to prove she was the child their father was proud of and she was not at all impressed with her Northern-raised brother.

However, this episode gives a hint to a stronger bond than Yara had admitted. She comes to Winterfell and chastises Theon for his foolish act of taking the castle. However, her hard demeanor cracks when she encourages her brother to come home and Theon begins to realize his mistake.

Most fans probably felt it was a safe bet that Theon would not be making it out of season 2 with his life. He fought until his last breath, and even sacrificed himself to try and save Bran. This was incredible growth from the character who earlier in the show had betrayed House Stark and captured Winterfell for himself.

It also showed growth from his days as Reek. Fans respected Theon's final choices, but it was still heartbreaking to see him lose his life after he found redemption and became his real self again. Sansa tried to break free of Ramsay's torment by placing a lit candle in the broken tower at Winterfell. Brienne of Tarth would see the candle and then help free Sansa. There were too many eyes on Sansa, but Theon had a better chance of moving the candle and going unnoticed.

Sansa entrusted him with this task, but when Ramsay confronted him, Theon ratted out Sansa and revealed what he was up to. He cost Sansa her best chance at escape, which also led to the death of the woman who told Sansa to light the candle in the first place. While the brothers are out hunting, Bran is nearly taken by some wildlings and a Night's Watch deserter, including Osha.

He saves Bran with some quick action. Robb Stark sends Theon to treat with Balon Greyjoy, who he has not seen in ten years. The idea is that Balon will be offered independence his desire for independence was the cause of the Greyjoy Rebellion if he agrees to help Robb defeat House Lannister.

However, Balon rejects Theon's proposal and taunts him for growing up wealthy with House Stark. He also meets his sister Asha Greyjoy who teases him and seduces him under a false identity to embarrass him.

Eventually he is given a position of minor authority and allowed to take some crew members to raid coastline villages. On his own authority he decides to attack Torrhen's Square to draw forces out of Winterfell, a decision Theon made when he was jealous of his sister for her accomplishments. He then seizes the castle and takes Rickon and Bran hostage, but when they escape he has two miller's sons killed and burns their bodies, mounting two severed and tar covered heads on top of the walls, making it seem as though he has killed the Stark boys as a method of sending a message to Winterfell that he is not to be disobeyed.

He is about to lose Winterfell to Rodrik Cassel , and is seriously considering joining the Night's Watch, which was advice given to him by Maester Luwin , who offers to show him a way out. However, before he can go to the Wall , a prisoner he released, Ramsay Bolton has arrived with his own men and begin attacking then northern forces surrounding them.

He immensely regrets it. Failed a Spot Check : He probably should have spent more time listening to Maester Luwin about the other Houses and their respective sigils since, despite being flayed on an X-shaped cross, he still doesn't figure out who's responsible for torturing him. Fingore : During his first torture session, a thin blade is slowly forced under one of his fingernails. When Ramsay replaces the torturer and carries on the sessions by himself, his first "game" ends with Theon's pinky finger getting flayed; an experience so painful that Theon is left begging for Ramsay to amputate it altogether.

Later, Theon is seen wearing a bandage over much of his right hand, implying that Ramsay has been doing the same for his other fingers. Subsequent episodes show that Theon still has most of the fingers on his right hand at least. He was able to hold the razor with that hand when giving Ramsay a shave, and there's a closeup of a glove being put on his hand before he's sent to Moat Cailin. Most likely because he wouldn't be much use as a slave if he couldn't hold or carry anything.

Flaying Alive : Ramsay skinned parts of him, particularly his hands. Foil : To Jon Snow. Both are raised under the House of Stark. Both suffer from "Well Done, Son! Both are Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life. The difference is Jon maintains his honor while Theon betrays his adopted family for his blood father who treats him poorly. Jon is loved by his father and half-siblings and grows up with his family while Theon grows up away from his family and has a father who doesn't even like him.

To Jaime Lannister. Both start off as cocky young men. At least once, Theon winds up in an incestuous situation with his sister while Jaime and his sister Cersei frequently engage in incest.

After experiencing dire circumstances, both are captured and lose a vital body part, which initially breaks them, and both manage to escape.

Both return home, but find they no longer have the power and influence they expected upon returning home. Both share close relationships with their sisters. However, after Theon returns home, Yara is far more supportive of Theon, while Cersei is less so with Jaime. To Tyrion Lannister. Both are desperately trying to earn the love or, at the very least, the respect of their respective fathers, who believe that they are a disappointment and a dishonor for their family name. Both commit morally wrong or even monstrous acts to achieve their goals: Tyrion basically does everything to save the reign of the cruel and sadistic Joffrey, who has demonstrated many times that he is unworthy of the throne, while Theon takes Winterfell, betrays the Starks, who was his family for a decade, and kill innocent people, including children.

Their arc in Season 2 ends with them failing miserably in their attempts: Theon is betrayed by his own men and becomes a hostage to Ramsay Snow, while Tyrion, despite keeping King's Landing standing long enough for Tywin and the Tyrells to save the day, is disfigured in battle, almost dies and receives no honor or reward for his deeds.

And, of course, both continue to be hated by their respective parents. Forced to Watch : Ramsay forced him to watch as he rapes Sansa on their wedding night. Forgiven, but Not Forgotten : By Season 7, the surviving Starks have become sympathetic of him despite his betrayal in Season 2, especially as he saved Sansa from the Boltons.

But they Jon specifically make it clear to Theon that his betrayal still stings. Glory Hound : He's desperate to make a name for himself somehow. Going Native : A lot of his problems come from the fact that his mindset is far more Northern than Ironborn, but he refuses to admit it.

This proves to be his undoing; he's willing to die rather than be "the Greyjoy who ran", not realizing that his Ironborn fighters think defiant last stands when running away with the loot is an option are just stupid. Dagmer usually wins out, which only serves to accelerate Theon's downfall.

Green-Eyed Monster : Appears to be quite jealous of Tyrion and the Lannisters due to their wealth and power. Later, of Yara's favorite status with their father. Groin Attack : Ramsay castrates him with a gelding knife. The Season 7 finale finally has him discover an upside to this, as he's now able to No-Sell any further strikes to the area.

Handicapped Badass : The handicapped part is Downplayed. Despite his torture, he is still able to hold his own with a sword in a fight. However, his experiences had definitely left their mark on him both Physically and Mentally. Heterosexual Life-Partners : With Robb. Seems to hold him in regard out of any other Stark and he is usually the first to stand by any of Robb's decisions. Theon: Am I your brother? Now and always? Robb: Now and always. Theon : I deserved everything.
